After seeing an amazing eclipse in Patagonia, I had the opportunity to spend a few extra days in Buenos Aires. I thought the capital would be a lot more lively. What I found surprised me. Even in the most touristy sites, there were very few people. So, where could I go to find the spirit of Argentina?

Después de ver un eclipse impresionante en Patagonia, tuve la oportunidad de pasar unos días más en Buenos Aires. Esperaba más movimiento en la capital. Lo que encontré me sorprendió. En los lugares más emblemáticos, había poca gente. Entonces ¿a dónde podría ir para encontrar el famoso espíritu argentino?

Surely, there must be lots of people in the Plaza de Mayo, I thought. Every year the citizens of Argentina celebrate the independence revolution here. Even more importantly, this historic Pink Palace, the office of the president, sits at one end of the plaza. They say it’s the most photographed site in the whole city. It’s also the most important part of the city to protest the country’s never-ending crises. Families of the thousands of people who went missing during the dictatorship of the 70s & 80s protest here on a regular basis. Imagine, then, my surprise on seeing just a single protester. Apart from her, there was hardly anyone in sight.

Seguramente debe haber mucha gente en la Plaza de Mayo, pensé. En esta plaza se celebra la revolución de la independencia de Argentina. Además, se encuentra aquí el edificio más importante de todo el país, el histórico palacio rosado, que contiene la oficina del presidente. Se dice que es el sitio más fotografiado de Buenos Aires. Por eso, también la plaza es el sitio más importante para la disensión política. Las madres de los desaparecidos durante la dictadura de los años 70 y 80 hacen protestas significativas con frecuencia en la plaza. Imagínate, entonces, mi sorpresa al ver una sola manifestante. Aparte de ella no había casi nadie.

Alright, I thought. Plaza de Mayo was empty but, for sure, there would have to be more people in La Boca, one of the city’s most popular neighbourhoods. One of Buenos Aires’ two famous soccer teams has their stadium here and all the residents like to paint their houses with the same colours of the team. Argentina is absolutely passionate about soccer, so it’s not surprising that this area is consistently packed with tourists. You have to fight with the crowds just to take a photo. But not now. It looked like a forgotten town, without even a single tourist. Just a few little kids passed a soccer ball back and forth. How strange to be in such a popular country without any tourists!

Está bien, pensé. La Plaza de Mayo estaba vacía pero seguramente tiene que haber mucha gente en el famoso barrio de La Boca, me dije. En el hogar de los Boca Juniors se pintan todas las casas con los mismos colores del equipo tan famoso. Siempre hay muchísimos turistas. Tienes que luchar con la multitud para sacar una foto. Pero, ahora no. Parecía un barrio olvidado, sin ningún turista. ¡Qué extraño estar en un país sin turistas!

If there’s nobody in the most popular neighbourhoods, maybe there might be some live in the more far-flung parts of the city? With this thought in mind, I headed to Villa Lugano, one of the most populated areas in the country. I was a bit worried about taking the metro. I’d read that it’s always jam-packed and that you have to fight to get on or off. I needn’t have worried. Never in my life have I seen such an empty train. How is that even possible at the peak of rush-hour?

Si no hay nadie en los barrios más visitados, ¿tal vez haya alguien en las afueras? Con este razonamiento, me fui hacia Villa Lugano, uno de los barrios más poblados del país. Estaba un poco preocupado por tomar el Subte. Había leído que está siempre lleno de gente y que es bastante difícil subir y bajar. No debería haberme preocupado. Nunca en mi vida había visto un tren tan vacío. ¿Cómo es posible durante la hora pico?

Lugano is a neighbourhood of the people. Years ago, much of Lugano was a “villa miseria”, what they call slums in Argentina. The villas, notorious for drugs and crime, are a big problem for the whole country, so the government has built new housing and apartment buildings so that the residents can life in better conditions. Nowadays, it’s become a middle-class neighbourhood.

Lugano es un barrio popular. Una vez gran parte del Lugano era una villa miseria. Las villas, caracterizadas por las drogas y el crimen, son un gran problema para la sociedad argentina, así que el gobierno ha construido viviendas nuevas para que la gente pueda vivir en mejores condiciones. Hoy en día es un barrio de la clase media.

I met Christian Gambarte via facebook. Christian was born and grew up in Lugano. He knows every nook and cranny and he’s proud to show it to all his visitors. More than a guide, he’s a new friend for anyone who wants to explore a less-visited part of the country.

Conocí a Christian Gambarte por facebook. Christian nació y se crió en Lugano. Por eso, conoce perfectamente cada rincón del barrio. Además tiene mucho orgullo por su hogar. Más que un guía, es un amigo para quien quiera conocer una parte del país poco visitado.

I was really excited to see the ad-hoc construction so typical of the villas. Christian took me to a part of Lugano where I could walk through the narrow alley-ways between the irregular brick walls. The city’s poor build their homes one floor at a time. When a family’s kids grow up, they build a new floor on top of their parent’s house. And the grandkids do the same, years later. But how high can you build like this before the whole things collapses?

Tenía muchas ganas de ver la construcción típica de las villas miserias, de la cual queda un poco en Lugano. Christian me llevó a una zona dentro de Lugano donde pude caminar por las calles muy estrechas. Se construyen las viviendas un piso a la vez. Cuando los hijos sean grandes, construyen una casa nueva encima de la de sus padres. Y los nietos hacen lo mismo, en turno. Pero, ¿qué tan alta puede ser una vivienda antes de que se derrumbe?

Obviously, COVID is a big problem in Argentina, as it is all over the world. Buenos Aires has been one of the hardest-hit cities and, I have to imagine, Lugano has suffered a lot. With that in mind, I was glad to come across a make-shift COVID-testing clinic, free for anyone in the neighbourhood.

Obviamente, el coronavirus es un gran problema en Argentina, como en todo el mundo. Buenos Aires ha sido una de las ciudades más afectadas y me tengo que imaginar, Lugano ha sufrido bastante. Con eso en mente, me dio alegría encontrar disponible la prueba del coronavirus gratis para todos.

In our tour of Lugano, we visited lots of interesting spots. From the soccer field where Christian used to play when he was a kid to the new ecological reserve, Christian showed me both the highs and lows of the neighbourhood. We passing by the old tango concert hall and strolled through the Walk of the Malvinas (where fallen soldiers in the Falkland Islands war are commemorated).

Durante nuestro recorrido de Lugano, conocimos muchos más lugares interesantes. Desde el campo de fútbol donde Christian jugaba en su niñez hasta la nueva reserva ecológica, pasando por el Paseo de Malvinas, me mostró lo bonito y lo feo del barrio.

I liked the postmodern architecture and the rich history hidden in the old train station and the tango bar. More than anything, though, I loved meeting Christian’s friends. In a country that has serious economic problems and is still in the middle of a pandemic, the people couldn’t have been more friendly. Just one example of Christian’s welcoming friends is Diego Staropoli, the most famous tattoo artist in the country. More than just a talented artist, Diego is well-known for offering free tattoos to women who have suffered from breast cancer, burn victims, and people who have large scars from accidents or surgeries. “By covering their scars with works of art they feel like themselves again”, Diego explains.

Me gustó la arquitectura postmoderna y la rica historia escondida en la vieja estación de trenes y la casa del tango. Más que nada, me encantó conocer a los amigos de Christian. En un país que sufre de graves problemas económicos y todavía una pandemia, la gente no podía haber sido más simpática. Sólo un ejemplo de los lugareños acogedores es Diego Staropoli, el tatuador más famoso del país. Además de ser un artista talentoso, les ofrece de forma totalmente gratuita tatuajes sanadores a mujeres que han padecido cáncer de mama y a personas que han sufrido grandes lesiones en sus pieles como quemaduras y cortes, así “tapándolos con obras de arte y permitiéndoles sentirse nuevamente insertados en la sociedad”, cuenta Diego.

I explored the most famous neighbourhoods of Buenos Aires in search of that spark that makes Argentine culture so captivating. Finally, I found it in one of the city’s most modest areas.

Recorrí los barrios más famosos de Buenos Aires en búsqueda de la vida argentina. Por fin, la encontré en una villa urbanizada con nuevos amigos.
